Aviation Medicine

Aviation medicine presents a significant component of aviation safety.

The Aeromedical Section (AMS) of the Flight Safety Department determines the fitness of aviation personnel to perform safely their professional duties. It has a major importance as contributes to flight safety, at the same time helps to preserve pilots’ health for their flying career, and of air traffic controllers.

The Aeromedical Section (AMS) supervises the Aeromedical Centres (AeMC) and the Aeromedical Examiners (AME). It is also the first instance for reviews in case of differences among pilots/controllers and AMEs.

In order to obtain or maintain valid their licenses, pilots and air traffic controllers are required to undergo specific medical examinations. The AMS establishes the requirements for the issue, validity revalidation and renewal of the medical certificates required for exercising the privileges of a pilot license, air traffic controller or student pilot.

Medical requirements for light aircraft pilot license (LAPL) private pilot license (PPL), a sailplane pilot license (SPL), or a balloon pilot license (BPL) commercial pilot license (CPL), a multi-crew pilot license (MPL), or an airline transport pilot license (ATPL) hang-glider and paraglider pilots, parachuting and cabin crew are established in the Regulation No. 5/2015 Laying down technical requirements and administrative procedures related to civil aviation Aircrew.

Medical requirements for air traffic controllers (ATCO) are established in the Regulation No. 5/2012 on Rules for Air Traffic Controllers’ Licences and other Certificates.

Applicants for and holders of a light aircraft pilot licence (LAPL) shall hold at least an LAPL medical certificate.

Applicants for and holders of a private pilot licence (PPL), a sailplane pilot licence (SPL), or a balloon pilot licence (BPL) shall hold at least a Class 2 medical certificate.

Applicants for and holders of an SPL or a BPL involved in commercial sailplane or balloon flights shall hold at least a Class 2 medical certificate.

If a night rating is added to a PPL or LAPL, the licence holder shall be colour safe.

Applicants for and holders of a commercial pilot licence (CPL), a multi-crew pilot licence (MPL), or an airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) shall hold a Class 1 medical certificate.

Applicants for and holders of a air traffic controllers licence (ATCO) shall hold a Class 3 medical certificate.

Reports on all medical examinations carried out on licensed flight crew in the Republic of Kosovo, including those conducted by Aeromedical Examiners outside Kosovo, will be submitted to the CAAK AMS for assessment for medical certification purposes.

In cases of doubt, or incomplete information of a particular matter, the AMS may require further specialist information to be provided by an applicant.
